“Enzo MacLeod is one of the most unusual crime solvers I have ever met;
sort of a cross between James Bond and Inspector Clouseau.”
The Enzo Files are a mix of whodunit, investigation, thrills, suspense and humour.
Readers of the Lewis Trilogy should not expect the same dark and troubled central character in the Enzo series. Although Enzo and Fin share the same surname, that is all they have in common.
Enzo is in his early fifties, half-Scottish, half-Italian. Formerly one of Scotland’s top forensic scientists, he now lives in France and works as a university professor in Toulouse.
Divorced in Scotland, and widowed in France, he has an estranged Scottish daughter, and another in France whom he has had to raise on his own. Enzo is a complex character who deals with tragic loss and a broken heart by covering it up with bluff and bluster, and his bravado often gets him into difficult situations.
As the result of a reckless wager, he becomes involved in solving old French ‘cold cases’ using the latest technology. But where there are unsolved murders, there are killers desperate to protect their freedom and keep their identities undiscovered; and Enzo soon finds that a lifetime in laboratories hardly equips him for the life-threatening situations he encounters.
Enzo’s investigations benefit from his formidable intellect but are often hampered by his lack of patience and tact, his zero tolerance of French bureaucrats, and his very complicated emotional life.
Extraordinary People gives an insight into the arcane world of France’s ruling intellectual elite. A complex puzzle sends Enzo on a scavenger hunt around France for body parts. It has been praised for its ingenuity and thrilling denouement in the catacombs of Paris.
PARIS. An old mystery. As midnight strikes, a man desperately seeking sanctuary flees into a church. The next day, his sudden disappearance will make him famous throughout France.
A new science. Forensic expert Enzo Macleod takes a wager to solve the seven most notorious French murders, armed with modern technology and a total disregard for the justice system.
A fresh trail. Deep in the catacombs below the city, he unearths dark clues deliberately set – and as he draws closer to the killer, discovers that he is to be the next victim..
The Critic involves the murder of a celebrated wine critic and takes place among the vineyards of the Gaillac region. Peter took a course in wine-tasting and oenology (and drank a lot of wine…) to ensure authenicity – such devotion to duty!
An unsolved case. Gil Petty, America’s most celebrated wine critic, is found strung up in a vineyard, dressed in the ceremonial robes of the Order of the Divine Bottle and pickled in wine.
An un-cracked code. For forensic expert Enzo Macleod, the key to this unsolved murder lies in decoding Petty’s mysterious reviews – which could make or break a vineyard’s reputation.
An uncorked criminal. Enzo finds that beneath the tranquil facade of French viticulture lurks a back-stabbing community riddled with rivalry – and someone who is ready to stop him even if they have to kill again.
The third book in the Enzo Files series is Blacklight Blue, in which the hunter becomes the hunted as Enzo finds himself targeted by someone who seems intent on destroying him and his entire family.
A death sentence. Diagnosed with a terminal illness, Enzo Macleod is running out of time to crack the most confounding of unsolved French murders.
A death threat. His daughter is nearly killed, Enzo is mugged – and then he is arrested. Someone is trying to destroy his character. Someone is framing him for murder.
A deathly enemy. Killers from the past will stop at nothing to halt Enzo, who must use all his forensic skills to solve the case – before they succeed..
A promise made to a dead man, leads Enzo to an island off the coast of Brittany, where the man’s study has lain untouched for more than 20 years. In this claustrophobic environment, Enzo must unravel the clues to the murdered that the man has left in plain sight. Enzo must confront the hostility of locals who have no desire to see the infamous murder back in the headlines. An attractive widow, a man charged but acquitted of the murder–but still the viable suspect, a crime scene frozen in time, a dangerous hell hole by the cliffs, and a collection of impenetrable messages, make this one of Enzo’s most difficult cases.
A Frozen Island. This tiny isle off the coast of Brittany is the scene of a murder left shrouded in mystery and grief.
A Frozen Crime. Adam Killian’s study has been left intact since his death – the perfect state for Enzo Macleod’s forensic investigation.
A Frozen Heart. Killian’s daughter-in-law is still hoping; the first suspect is still hiding; and the treacherous island itself still has a revelation for Enzo
When France’s top chef, Marc Fraysse, summoned the world’s press to make a shattering announcement, rumors abounded that he was about to lose one of his three coveted Michelin stars. Instead, on arrival at his remote restaurant on a volcanic plateau in central France, they were greeted with the news that the troubled genius had been murdered, and the message he intended to deliver was never made. Seven years on, the identity of his killer also remains an enigma. Enzo Macleod takes on his fifth cold case and delves into the big business and high stakes of French haute cuisine. As winter sets in, and snow gathers along a volcanic horizon, he retraces long cold footsteps across a remote hilltop. But unravelling the complex web of relationships that surrounded the brilliant and mercurial chef – a spurned lover, a jealous wife, an estranged brother, an embittered food critic–also leads to strange parallels with his own life. And in opening up this celebrated cold case, he finds himself reopening old wounds from his past.
A Silenced Man. Footprints in the snow lead to the murder scene of Marc Fraysse, France’s most celebrated chef – brutally shot before he could make the revelation of his career.
A Determined Man. Seven years on and the mystery still raw, Enzo Macleod, forensic investigator, forays into the heated world of haute cuisine to uncover bitter feuds and a burning secret.
A Hunted Man. The Fraysse family history is as twisted as Enzo’s own. And in his pursuit of truth, the depths of deceit threaten to consume Enzo – and that which he cherishes most.
In 1989, a killer dumped the body of twenty-year-old Lucie Martin into a picturesque lake in the West of France. Fourteen years later, during a summer heat wave, a drought exposed her remains – bleached bones amid the scorched mud and slime.
No one was ever convicted of her murder. But now, forensic expert Enzo Macleod is reviewing this stone cold case – the toughest of those he has been challenged to solve.
Yet when Enzo finds a flaw in the original evidence surrounding Lucie’s murder, he opens a Pandora’s box that not only raises old ghosts but endangers his entire family.
